The euro (EUR or ") is the common currency from at present 12 countries of the European union as well as the non-European Union states Monaco, San Marino and Vatikanstadt. Euro coins and - notes were introduced on 1 January 2002. The embossing year of the coins can decrease/go back however to 1999, thus the year, to which the currency was officially introduced. A euro divided into 100 cent. There are eight nominal values:

All euro-states have a common front of their coins, which the value of the coin shows. It was sketched by the Belgian designer Luc Luycx. On the 1, 2, and Europe is represented in relation to the world. The picture on the 10, 20 - and shows the individual European Union states (one considers that the European Union members, that do not participate in the euro are likewise explained, like e.g. Great Britain). Finally show the 1 - and connected Europe of the 15 old European Union countries. The 10 new member states, which likewise belong since the extension to the East in May 2004 to the European Union, are not yet represented on the coins. All coins show also still 12 stars as symbol of Europe; this does not have to do anything with "12 states ", like is falsely often assumed (see also: Symbolism of the European flag). Starting from 2006 the 10, 20 become - and and 1 - and arranged new. The new coins are to be spent with the entry of the first new countries to the monetary union. This is expected at the earliest 2007. The twelve old euro countries are to spend the new coins, as soon as the technical preparations are final in addition.
Each country, which participates in the euro, has its own organization of the back. This is enough from the simple illustration of the head of state (for example Belgium) up to a different execution for each individual coin (for example Austria). All coins show the year and the 12 stars of the European Union flag on this side.

Although only twelve states of the European Union are involved in the monetary union, there are 15 different Monaco, San Marino and the Vatikanstadt are not European Union members, however with France and/or Italy among other things own monetary unions and therefore own euro coins brought out. Andorra emitted against it so far still none.
